The Governor/Chancellor, NWFP Universities, Mr. Owais Ahmed Ghani, visited the NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar on March 8, 2008. On arrival the Governor was given a warm welcome.
In a presentation in the committee room of the University, the Governor was informed of the education, research and developmental activities of the University. Later the Governor spoke to the faculty, staff and students of the University in the main auditorium of the University.
In his speech the Governor appreciated the education, research and developmental activities of the University. He said that the philosophy of Government regarding the higher education policy is based premise that higher education provides leadership in all disciplines and therefore it must be given the highest priority. General education, he said, is important but unskilled population is a burden on the society.
He said that our country has gone through many turmoils during the last 60 years, but with the hard work and dedication of its people, it came out of these turmoils as an atomic power. The Governor said that “despite all the problems faced by the country after 9/11, our economy is growing, the stock exchange is growing and moving forward, we have developed certain capabilities in science and technology and we are on the verge of a technological country; for that we must invest in higher education”.
The Governor urged upon the faculty and students to face the challenges in higher education in their relevant disciplines. “we must acquire scientific and technical education, simultaneously maintaining our culture and identity. The strength of our society is our family system.”
Earlier the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Said Khan Khalil in his speech highlighted the salient achievements of the University. He said that the University has been playing a vital role in imparting agricultural education and conducting academic and applied agricultural research throughout the Province, and disseminating the results of research among the end users through its outreach/public service activities.
The VC informed that in recognition of their achievements the faculty and students of the University have received many awards in the form of scholarships, National Education Awards, President Pride of Performance, Best University Teacher Award, Aizaz-i-Fazeelat, Tamgha-I-Imtiaz, PEF National Award and Post -Doc Awards.
He explained that the University is implementing a number of developmental projects. These mega projects of the University include infra structural development such as Academic and Administration Block, Students Hostel, Foreign Faculty Housing, Sports Complex, Veterinary Hospital, Milk Parlor, Animal Breeding Centre, Milk Processing Unit, Feed Mill, Animal Sheds, Male & Female Guest Houses and Residential Colony.
These mega projects, the VC added, also include establishment and upgradation of laboratories and HRD component in the form Ph.D. programmes and advanced trainings for faculty and staff of the University.
The VC informed the Governor, NWFP that the University has established linkages and collaborations with a number of national and international organizations and universities throughout the world for joint programmes.
The Vice Chancellor lauded the unprecedented support and financial help of the HEC to all the Universities in Pakistan including NWFP Agricultural University. He highly appreciated and paid tributes to Prof. Dr. Ataur Rehman, Chairman HEC and his team for their dedication and endeavours for the cause of higher education.
The Governor, NWFP lateron inaugurated the newly constructed Academic Block of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences and also visited the IBGE.
