NWFP Agricultural University Peshawar

Faculty of Crop Production Sciences

Department of Agronomy

1.  Introduction:

Agronomy, the science related to food production:
The existence of human beings on this planet depends on food produced by crop plants through the process of photosynthesis. Without plants human existence is not possible. Agronomists have the challenging job of providing enough food for mankind and their domestic animals.

Brief history:
Agronomy was the only major parent Department when agriculture classes started back in 1933 at Islamia College, Peshawar. The Department gave birth to several other Departments when in 1968 it was declared as a full fledged separate Agriculture College, then Faculty in 1976 and ultimately a University in 1981.

Objectives:
The Department aims at providing quality academic training in crop production crop physiology, seed technology and arid zone agronomy. The department also conducts problem oriented research and provides educational and research linkages for uplifting the living standards of the agricultural community in the province. The Department offers specialized courses leading to Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate degrees in Agronomy.
The department of agronomy also provides training facilities to farmers, students of neighbor countries and other participants from private sector. The department of agronomy has linkages with national and international organization, both within the country and abroad, like PARC and NARC in Islamabad and British Council Educational Program. The teaching staff of the department participates in inservice training of officers of NWFP Agriculture Department, ADB and UBL, Field days, National and International seminars of different local and global research organizations.

Teaching:
The undergraduate program serves all the students of the university. The graduate and postgraduate programs are offered to those majoring in agronomy. Four major study areas are offered: Crop Production; Crop Physiology; Seed Technology and Arid Zone Agronomy.

Research:
The department reserves around 20 Acres of Open Experimental Area to conduct problem oriented research at graduate and postgraduate level. The faculty members are also running number of research projects funded by National Organizations.
