1. Department of Animal Nutrition
2. Department of Livestock Management
3. Department of Poultry Sciences
4. Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics
5. Department of Animal Health

The Faculty has been established with the following aims:

Aims

Prepare students to effectively lead the animal sector with a strong background of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences.

Conduct basic and adaptive research to improve animals' health and productivity in systems with low and high inputs (small and commercial herds).

Develop linkages with national and international organization in education, research and outreach for sustainable development of animal farming and industry.

Major Activities

As part of the mandate FAHVS has been offering DVM, M.Sc (Hons) specialized degree in Animal Nutrition, Poultry Science, and Livestock Management with a recent addition of PhD program. The Faculty realized that the degree programs be standardized for basic and postgraduate education in veterinary sciences and animal husbandry to being these on line with the institutions in the country and abroad. The curricula was developed jointly with other universities to produce graduates with professional knowledge and skills compatible to job and development in the country. Efforts are being made to match the professional standards of degree programs in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences to those required by the national regulatory bodies.

A significant activity in research has been student projects in postgraduate disciplines and research projects funded by other agencies or collaborative research with other departments. The Faculty is linked with outreach departments farmers' and business community and NGOs. Various training courses, workshops and seminars are frequently arranged to provide a shape to this activity. The Faculty is also helping the university administration in supervision and coordination of academic activities and disciplines. Currently a mega project is being implemented for further strengthening the teaching and research capabilities. In this regard construction of Academic Block, Animal Hospitals , Animal breeding and Semen Production Unit, Feed Technology and Dairy Technology Centers is in progress with a grant of Rs.168 million funded by HEC.

Facilities

All laboratories are equipped with modern instruments. Dairy cattle, water buffaloes and poultry flocks are available for research at the University Farms. A well-equipped hatchery is available to produce day old chicks for research and production purposes. A new livestock complex with better facilities for individual stalls and metabolic studies, has been created. Sufficient land for forage research is also available at the farm center. The faculty is linked with other three research stations in the province.

Academic and Research achievements

1. University authority and professionals adapted uniform curricula designed by national curriculum committee of UGC for B.Sc., M.Sc. (Hons.) And Ph.D in 1999
2. Ph.D. program started in 2000 in Animal Nutrition, Poultry Science, Livestock Management and Animal Breeding. The Faculty has honor to take lead by producing first ever Ph.D. graduate (2002) in Poultry Science in the University. At present nine other students are enrolled in their Ph.D program in this Faculty.
3. Specialized degree programs at M.Sc (Hons.) level in the departments of Animal Nutrition, Poultry Sciences, Livestock Management, and Animal Breeding and Genetics was started in 2002-2003 to replace M.Sc. (Hons.) AH program jointly offered by the departments in one specialization.
4.
Since 1981, about 300 students have been graduated with BSc Hons and MSc Hons. Animal Husbandry from the Faculty and they are working on important positions in various government and private organizations.
5.
During last 10 years, more than 125 research papers were published in the coutry or abroad in various disciplines of Animal Husbandry.
6.
A new five years composite DVM degree program has been launched in January 5, 2004 for replacing the old B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Animal Husbandry. The program was so attractive from the evident that the intake of students dramatically increased to double. The same competition was seen in the second year when top 40 students were admitted on merit with higher grades in their high schools/colleges.
7.
Due to early termination of TIPAN project the facilities for imparting veterinary education could not achieve. Therefore, the efforts mainly remained on strengthening of the existing AH program. However, a mega project entitled "strengthening of teaching and research capabilities of Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, NWFP Agricultural
8.
In Post TIPAN phase new projects were attracted through HEC, PARC, Word Bank and thus the Laboratories were further equipped with sophisticated equipment to meet the requirements of advance research in postgraduate studies. Another funding source to upgrade our laboratories was "S&T Lab. Up-gradation Project."
9.
Highly qualified and experienced staff serves the faculty. Four senior professors are retired in post TIPAN period. At present out of 16 faculty members 10 are Ph.D and the rest are engaged for obtaining their higher degrees in the same institution and abroad.
10.
Close affiliation of the faculty members with various national and international organizations exists. Research Projects /assignments those funded from outside the university frequently given to the staff members by these organizations.
