The Department of Mathematics and Statistics was established in 1963. The ever first computer laboratory of the university was also setup in this department (by TIPAN) in 1986, with the advent of computer technology, it was urgently felt that computer courses be incorporated in the curricula of Agriculture. So computer science as a compulsory subject was introduced at graduate level in 1987.

Presently, this multi-disciplined department imparts education in three important science subjects i.e. Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science to the students at graduate and post-graduate level. Agricultural development is not possible without research and Mathematical sciences pay a vital role in this connection. Specifically, statistics is the major subject taught to enable the students in planning/designing of their experiments in the laboratory, green house or field etc. The department offers various compulsory and optional courses under the revised scheme of studies, effective from 2003, in the above three subjects at graduate/post-graduate level.
There are two computer labs, and one statistics lab in the department. One of the computer lab (computer new lab) is equipped with 32 latest Pentium-IV computers connected through network and having the Internet facility. Various statistical packages like MSTATC, SHAZAM; Mathematica etc. have been installed in both the computer labs, to cater to the needs of the students and faculty members.
The department also intends to start post-graduate degree programs in mathematical sciences in near future.
