The Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics, was established after the approval of the Academic Council of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural University Peshawar in 2005. The Department has three qualified regular faculty. Two of them are PhD qualified whereas the third one is under the process of acquiring. Objectives behind its establishment were to introduce knowledge of genetics through the wise use of appropriate breeding and molecular technological skills among the animal genetists. Local animal population best matches to the production environmental conditions, thus their genetic improvement is vital for sustainable increased in productivity. Among the major courses offered to under-graduate and post-graduate classes includes cytology, cyto-genetics, biometry, population genetics, quantitative genetics and molecular genetics.
Besides teaching, two research projects, ALP (PARC) and HEC, have been successfully completed, and 7 post-graduates qualified in the ABG discipline. Major emphasis is laid on characterization of local genetic resources, their conservation and genetic improvement for economic and future traits.
