Institute
of Development Studies (I.D.S)
Mission and Scope
Institute of Development
Studies (IDS) is a multi-disciplinary unit of Faculty of Rural
Social Sciences that assembles information,
conducts studies and provides trainings, leading
to sustainable improvement of resources use,
productivity, and socio-economic well being.
While particularly concerned with situations,
potentials, and assistance needs of people in
agricultural and rural areas, the expertise
available through IDS is being utilized to help
address broader aspects of development. The
work relates not only to NWFP itself, but also
to the tribal areas, neighboring economies,
and national programmes and policies.
Origin and Growth:
The Institute began in 1953 as “The Board
of Economic Enquiry”. In 1981 it was upgraded
to Institute status, and merged with the NWFP
Agricultural University. It has a staff of about
25 persons including 18 applied economists and
sociologists including several women. IDS has
a research programme that emphasizes local surveys
and concerns for disadvantaged rural groups,
and degree programmes in Rural Development,
Economics, & Rural Sociology. The institute
has professional links with leading institutions
within the country as well as abroad.
More than half of the IDS professional staff
have completed advanced studies overseas. They
have returned with new skills in economic and
sociological theory, statistical techniques,
and computer use that are adding much to analytical
capacities. The Institute has its own Journal
i.e. Journal of Development Studies and a Seminar
Library with a collection of 23,000 books and
well maintained computer lab.
