Department of Poultry Sciences

Poultry production is one of the significant livestock production activities providing better opportunities for income generation and self-employment for male and females as well. Because of its diversified nature, poultry sector has rapidly grown in the recent few decades. Now-a-days it has been adopted as full time business and is expanding day-by-day. Keeping in view the future prospects and challenges in this sector, the Department has extended its research activities to on farm problems and field-oriented activities. Numerous research studies on chicken (back yard poultry, broiler, layer, breeders) and quails have been conducted and investigations are in progress to make poultry a more viable and profitable business. Community oriented studies have also been conducted and are in progress to investigate problems, potentials and future prospectus of poultry production for better productivity and income generation.

Aims:

Imparts academic training to undergraduate and graduate students to better utilize their services for community development.
Conducts academic and problem-oriented research to produce quality products to better serve the nation’s nutrition demand and increase farm income.
Extends services to the farmers through provision of training, on-spot problem investigation and addressing issues of immense importance thereby increasing productivity.

Academic programs

The Department is actively involved in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses (DVM), conducting research trials and help farming community in applying appropriate management tools and solving their problems regarding poultry production.

A full-pledged M.Sc. (Hons) program in Poultry Science has been initiated to better train the students in the relevant field and impart specific skills so that they can better serve the community and increase farm income through innovations and modern husbandry practices. Students in Ph.D. have also been enrolled.

Research and Training Facility

At present the Department has got three experimental units and two laboratories with modern equipments to facilitate various research trials. Research studies on broilers and quails are conducted at the experimental units. The Department has got modern incubators for hatching eggs on commercial and experimental basis. The Department is also collaborating in research with other line agencies and government departments. In addition, special trainings are arranged for farmers and organizations interested in poultry production. The Department will soon start a research project on production and economic implications of commercial layer production extended to variable egg laying periods.

In order to acquaint the students with most practical and field skills, the Department is in close contact with private sector organizations and poultry market where students are encouraged to witness the practical practices and keep themselves in touch with the market. Special interim trainings are arranged in collaboration with SB Poultry Breeders at various stations of the said organization.

In the near future, research/experimental and demonstration units for egg laying birds be established in the poultry premises to provide more slots for learning and practical demonstration.
