Faculty of Crop Protection Sciences
Department of Weed Science

The Weed Science Department is the first of its kind in the country. In the light of the recommendations of the TIPAN and ARP-II teams and the recommendations of the Weed Science Society of Pakistan, the NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar emerged as a pioneer to initiate a separate full fledged department among the galaxy of its departments in the year 2000. The start was taken with M.Sc. Hons. class and the first batch were admitted in 2000-2001. One year later i.e. 2001-2002 the B.Sc. Hons. class was started. A very humble start with only two teachers was taken. The strength of the faculty is still the same, at least on regular basis. The department is progressing by imparting the latest knowledge in the discipline. Moreover, it is the head quarter of the Weed Science Society of Pakistan and the Pakistan Ethnobotanical Society. Pakistan Journal of Weed Science under the auspices of the Weed Science Society of Pakistan is going to be published from this department. The present Chairman of Weed Science Department is the President of Pakistan Weed Science Society of Pakistan and Pakistan Ethnobotanical Association.

The potential yield of crop varieties will remain a mere illusion, unless and until proper weed management package is adopted. As all these varieties had been evolved under optimum weed management condition, the weedy conditions of the farmers are not conducive for their yield. Under such circumstances, farmer's own varieties or land races are better yielder and competitors as compared to be modern improved cultivars. Weeds inflict 20-30% losses in different crops on the average. On national level total monitory losses due to weeds well exceeds beyond 120 billion, whereas wheat alone account for more than 30 billions.
