About Department
The Department of Mathematics, Statistics & Computer Science was established in 1963. In the beginning, Physics as a compulsory subject for students of Agriculture was also part of this Department. With the advent of computer technology, the first computer laboratory of the University was established in this Department in 1986, and Computer Science as a compulsory subject was introduced in the agricultural curriculum at the graduate level in 1987. At present, this multidisciplinary Department disseminates knowledge in the fields of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science to graduate and postgraduate students of Agricultural Sciences, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, DVM/Animal Health, Animal Nutrition, Poultry Science, Livestock Management, Animal Breeding & Genetics, Human Nutrition & Dietetics and Social Sciences (Agriculture & Applied Economics, Rural Sociology, Extension Education & Communication, Development Studies, Economics and Islamic Studies) under the revised scheme of studies of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Agricultural development is not possible without intensive research, and computational sciences play a vital role in this regard. Specifically, Statistics is taught to enable students to plan and design experiments in the field, laboratory, greenhouse/screen-house, etc. The Department also facilitates research students and scholars in data analysis, presentation, and interpretation. The Department also started four-year B.S. programs in Mathematics and Statistics in Fall 2018. This multidisciplinary Department provides necessary guidance and technical assistance throughout the research process, from the initial planning of research and experiments to data analysis, thereby contributing to quality research. The Department aims to produce highly skilled students capable of addressing challenges related to experimental design, sampling plans, surveys, data collection, presentation, analysis, and interpretation. Apart from Agriculture, the Department also facilitates and supports students from other disciplines, including Rural Sociology, Economics, Rural Development, Management Sciences, and Agricultural Extension Education & Communication etc. The vision of the Department is to provide quality education, advanced research opportunities, and analytical support in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science to students and researchers of the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, while promoting interdisciplinary collaboration across scientific, agricultural, social, and management disciplines. The Department envisions becoming a leading center for quantitative and computational education, statistical research, and interdisciplinary analytical collaboration, producing highly skilled graduates, scholars, and researchers capable of addressing contemporary and emerging challenges at national and international levels. The mission of the Department is to contribute to the academic and research excellence of the University by providing quality education in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science; developing graduates with strong analytical, computational, statistical, and problem-solving skills; supporting researchers in experimental design, sampling, surveys, data management, statistical analysis, and interpretation; promoting high-quality and productive research in statistical and quantitative sciences; facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration across agricultural, biological, health, social, management, and computational sciences; and preparing highly trained graduates and researchers to meet the evolving needs of public and private sectors at national and international levels in accordance with market demands.
