About Department
The Department of Rural Sociology was established in March 2006 to strengthen the Faculty of Rural Social Sciences and bring it in line with leading national and international universities. The Department offers BSc, MSc (Hons), and PhD programs in Rural Sociology, along with MPhil Sociology and BS Sociology on a self-support basis. Its primary mandate is to integrate social sciences with agricultural development and effectively connect research and innovation with farming communities. The Department addresses the socio-economic challenges of rural and agricultural communities through teaching, research, fieldwork, and evidence-based interventions. It has a qualified and experienced faculty committed to high-quality teaching, research, practical learning, and field-based data collection. Research remains an integral component, covering diverse social issues and supporting postgraduate research at MPhil, MSc, and PhD levels. The Department also seeks national and international research partnerships to generate evidence-based solutions to emerging societal and rural development challenges.
